In the world of Aesthetics, sometimes the line between what is “real” and what is obviously “fake” is often blurred. As aestheticians, we strive, and in some states, are licensed to solely enhance natural beauty while sometimes embracing an artful trickery that comes with our craft. For this week’s blog, Id like to discuss what it really means to pursue “the fake” in our profession, and how can we balance authenticity with the enhancements our clients desire?
The Art of Enhancement
In more ways than one, our work revolves around enhancing what nature has provided. From facials and peels to fillers, Botox, and Laser, we use a variety of tools and techniques to help our clients look and feel their best. These “enhancements,” though artificial, are not intended to create something fake. Instead, they aim to highlight and accentuate natural beauty, helping individuals to feel more confident and satisfied with their appearance.
The Role of Makeup
All you have to do is spend a little time watching Reels or TikTok videos to know that Makeup is perhaps the most obvious example of the "fake" in aesthetics. Foundation, contouring, and other techniques have the ability to dramatically alter someone's appearance. However, and in my opinion, makeup is an art form that allows for self-expression and creativity. It's a way for people to experiment with different looks and find what makes them feel beautiful.
Stars such as Instagram faves “Jeffree Star” and the “Bling King” as well as industry staples, Pat McGrath, Bobbi Brown, Sir John and the immortal, Kevin Aucoin are just a few others that continue to be examples of makeup styles and continue to attract novice and “pro” artists alike.
Embracing Technology
A visit to the most recent industry skin and body shows prove that advancements in technology have given us even more tools to enhance and rejuvenate. Laser treatments, Hydro-dermabrasion/Micro-dermabrasion, UL therapy, LED, Cryotherapy, Nano/Micro-channeling and MicroNeedling as well as a plethora and other procedures can produce stunning results that were once thought impossible. These technological advances, while artificial, provide real benefits by improving skin texture, reducing signs of aging, and more.
Ethical Considerations
I would be remiss if I didn’t insert a paragraph about ethical behaviors. As we pursue the fake, it's crucial to maintain ethical standards. We must ensure and educate our clients (as well as consumers who read our advertisement and subscribe to our social media) that they must have realistic expectations and understand the procedures they're undergoing. It's our responsibility as licensed professionals to provide safe, effective treatments and to advise against anything that could cause harm or just be…unrealistic!
Finding Balance
In the pursuit of the fake, balance is key. Enhancements should never overshadow the natural beauty of our clients. Our goals SHOULD be to create harmony between the real and the artificial, enhancing what is already there without compromising authenticity. When balance is achieved, I believe we are able to boost self-esteem for some.
In the End...
In an Aesthetician Reality, “Fake” is not something to be shunned, but embraced with care and skill. As aestheticians, our job is to navigate this delicate balance, using our expertise, education and skills to help clients achieve their beauty goals while maintaining a sense of authenticity.
After all, beauty is not just about appearance but also about confidence and self-expression!
