Screw the Ball! Focus on the Guy Who Threw It

Screw the Ball! Focus on the Guy Who Threw It

I spent last week at an annual Aesthetic event in Atlanta known as "The Skin Games". An international aesthetics competition that brings together the skills involved with licensed aesthetics, displaying techniques, massage, products and finishes with an awards show. Contestants from around the world who offer aesthetics, massage and other treatments associated with skin compete in categories for cash and trophies.

After placing in different categories that I had entered (2023 & 2024), I wanted to be seated on the opposite side of the table set to judge the case studies of my peers. I learned a lot from my peer judges. Professionals that came from all over the world and the U.S. They also came from different walks of aesthetic industry life.

It's both a fun and exhausting experience all in one! So, when I did get to take a break, I was able to tune into a little TV including a documentary which featured an icon in New York Yankees baseball known. His name? George Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner was known to many in his day to be a mentor to many in the baseball community throughout New York, but that evening he became a mentor to me with a simple quip.

"Screw watching the ball, keep your eye on the guy who threw it"....

I flew home to Phoenix realizing how much baseball can mirror how we operate our businesses to cultivate success. As an Aesthetician in a somewhat fast-paced world of business, it's easy to get caught up in the latest idea, the newest product, or the trendiest technique. We often find ourselves chasing after the next big thing, eager to catch the ball that's been thrown our way. This is where the Steinbrenner saying offers a valuable lesson: Focus on the innovator or mentor!

This piece of advice is about looking deeper. It's about understanding not just the opportunity in front of you, but also the person or company presenting it. What are their motives? What is their track record? Why are they pitching this to you now?

Here’s why I believe keeping your eye on the "ball thrower" is key in business decision-making.

1. Understand Intentions

When someone introduces a new idea, it's essential to consider their intentions. Are they genuinely interested in solving a problem, or is their motivation purely profit-driven? Are they seeking a partnership that benefits both parties, or just looking for a quick gain at your expense? Taking time to assess their motives can prevent costly mistakes.

2. Evaluate Credibility

Who is offering the idea or product? Do they have a proven track record? Have they demonstrated expertise and integrity in the past? Research their background, reputation, and previous ventures. Trust is earned, and credibility should never be assumed.

3. Analyze the Timing

Why is this opportunity coming your way now? Is the timing strategic, or is it reactive? Understanding the timing can help you determine whether the opportunity is worth pursuing or if it's a distraction from your current goals.

4. Look for Consistency

Is this person or company consistent in their messaging, values, and actions? Consistency can be a sign of reliability, while inconsistency might indicate hidden agendas or potential issues down the line.

5. Trust but Verify

It's okay to be optimistic, but it's wise to verify claims and promises. Ask questions. Request proof. Look for evidence that supports the proposal. A trustworthy individual will appreciate your diligence and provide transparency.

In the End..

In business, opportunities will always come your way, but not all are created equal. By focusing on who is presenting the idea rather than the idea itself, you sharpen your decision-making skills and protect your business from potential pitfalls.

So next time someone throws an exciting pitch your way, remember: forget the ball for a moment and focus on who threw it. That perspective might just be the difference between a smart move and a costly misstep.
